Our Story

Welcome to Crewel! I'm Jess, the proud owner of this creative haven, and I'm excited to share my story with you.

The journey of Crewel began amidst a challenging transition. I took over this business (formerly known as Sarajo) with a vision to transform it into a place that not only celebrates artistry and craftsmanship but also operates with a commitment to ethical business practices. My inspiration to create a positive change in the industry stemmed from my personal experiences, pushing me to envision a new business that is more than just a storefront.

At Crewel, my goal is twofold: I aim to make the world a prettier place through the beautiful, handcrafted treasures I offer, and I am dedicated to educating my customers about textiles, craft techniques, and diverse cultures from around the world. My space is a celebration of artistry and tradition, where each item has a story to tell.

I recognize the importance of involving younger generations in the antique industry, a sector often overlooked by the youth. I am committed to bridging this gap by encouraging and mentoring emerging talents. I believe that the preservation of traditional crafts and the integration of younger perspectives are crucial for the industry's vitality and longevity.

As you explore Crewel, you'll find a curated collection that reflects my passion for art, culture, and sustainability. For now, we're online only, but we will soon have an appointment-only showroom. I invite you to join me on this journey of discovery, where each piece carries with it a piece of history and a commitment to a more beautiful and conscious world.

My bio:

Born and raised in Staten Island, I was drawn to the arts from a young age - beginning with drawing, painting, and sculpture. After graduating from Montclair State University with a BFA in Technical Theater, I began my professional career as a Set Designer, Painter, and Carpenter in the NYC theater scene. Once I started working at Sarajo in 2018 as the gallery assistant and restoration artist, my direction changed. I became enthralled with the beauty of textiles and fell in love through research and repair. I became the manager in 2019 and took over the business from the previous owner in May 2023. Creative and moral differences lead me to re-brand the business and separate myself from the previous owner, which is how Crewel was born! I currently reside in Brooklyn with my two cats.
