Product details

Binakul Weave

Binakul directly translates "to do a sphere," and it is a method of weaving common to the Iloko region in Northwestern Luzon, the Philippines. The design creates illusions of curves and movement using only straight lines. It is believed that the designs represent the sea, and can be used to keep away malevolent spirits. To western eyes Binakul weaves are reminiscent of op-art.

This piece displays the "cat's paw" pattern using red, white, and black cotton, and consists of three panels sewn together to create a blanket.
